With all the attention being paid to the presidential election in November, local races may have seemed a bit overlooked.

That may change next Tuesday when the Norfolk Youth Leadership Council hosts a town-hall meeting featuring Norfolk’s two mayoral candidates.

Sue Fuchtman and Tom Schommer are vying to succeed Gordon Adams, who chose not to seek re-election, as the mayor of Norfolk. Fuchtman was the top vote-getter in the primary election in May.

The youth leadership council is made up of high school students from Norfolk’s three high schools and seeks to promote greater youth involvement in issues affecting teenagers.

The mayoral forum will be Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Lifelong Learning Center on the Northeast Community College campus. The event is open to the public and refreshments will be available.
Members of the youth leadership council will serve as moderators, but all questions for the two candidates will come from audience members.

Drew Oswald and Stephen Sunderman, representatives of the council, said the goal of the event is to actively involve the community in the electoral process and, more importantly, help voters become more informed about the candidates in the race.

“We ask that people attending bring some thought-out questions relating to city issues. There will be paper and pencils provided to write down notes or questions to ask,” Sunderman said.
