Concerns About timing
NORFOLK — I have heard and read a lot as of late on the concept of a shared facility for the City of Norfolk, the chamber and several other area resources. I really think the concept makes a lot of sense. The initial investment would be more, but the ongoing maintenance and utility costs would certainly pay for itself over time. I feel the shared facility would also centralize many of our area resources. This would be a net gain in many areas but especially in economic development. Think of the convenience and show of unity for future business and industry owners new to the area.
With all these positives, there is still great debate on placement and prudence of such a property. I know the current administration is doing its best to see that new city offices happen under its watch.
My issue with this process is timing. I feel with a new mayor, city administrator and potentially new city council members, we need to continue dialogue, but any final decisions should be made after the elections later this year.
Nothing ever got done by waiting, but rushing to a decision on such an important and costly issue is a bigger mistake. I feel strongly that our future community leaders should make this important decision. We will only do this once, so let’s take time and do it right. I encourage you all to get with your city council members and share your thoughts on this important topic before haste takes us too far into this process to turn back.
